Winner of the Teaching Innovation Award of the University of Munich in 2013

Professors Helmut Kuechenhoff (Department of Statistics) and Paul W. Thurner (Department of Political Science) are the winners of the LMU Teaching Innovation Award 2013.

Since 2 years they have been offering joint courses for students of the statistical and political science department, respectively. The series of seminars on "APPLIED SURVEY and ELECTORAL RESEARCH" culminated in a large-scale project on 'Exit Polling' at the occasion of the Federal and Bavarian elections in September 2013. More than 70 students participated and collected more than 13.000 exit poll interviews in Munich.

The scientific objective of the project is an assessment of existing approaches to ecological inference and the development of so-called hybrid models using both individual and aggregate data for retrodiction and forecasting.

Currently, collected data are investigated by numerous student projects and presented in the ongoing seminar 2013/14. It is intended to publish results in a series of articles.

Financial support by the Statistical Office of the City of Munich and Infratest dimap is gratefully acknowledged.
