Study Abroad

LMU's Network

The Geschwister-Scholl-Institute strongly supports you in completing a stay abroad as part of your studies. If you study abroad, you will not only score points for your CV, but for life. With over 530 partner universities, LMU offers you a worldwide network. There are numerous partnerships with European and non-European universities through Erasmus+ and LMUexchange.

We recommend that students on the Bachelor's degree programme go abroad from the third semester onwards, and students on the Master's degree programme from the second semester onwards. If you have any questions about studying abroad, please contact the Exchange Coordination. Further information can be found here.

Learning Agreement

A Learning Agreement is a written agreement between the student, the home university and the partner university on the type and scope of the coursework to be completed during an exchange stay.

You draw up the Learning Agreements in consultation with your home and partner universities after you have been accepted for a place abroad. Erasmus students are required to submit a Learning Agreement. We also ask LMUexchange students to submit a Learning Agreement so that we can help you to achieve your study goals in the best possible way.

To prepare a Learning Agreement, please contact the study programme coordination with a list of courses you would like to take during your exchange stay at the partner university. Ideally, you should include information on the course content, type and scope of examinations and your wishes for recognition.

Coursework Recognition

Generally, you can have your conducted coursework recognized by your home university. Please contact the study programme coordination ahead of your stay abroad so that the courses available abroad can be checked for possible recognition. The review is based on two criteria:

  1. Content: There must be no significant difference between the content of the course abroad and the module at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for which you would like to have the course recognized. For example, if you wish to take the module "Introduction to Political Theory" abroad, you should deal with comparable content in the course abroad.
  2. Examination: There must be no difference with regard to the type and no significant difference with regard to the scope of the examination. For example, if you wish to take the module "Introduction to Political Theory" abroad, for which a ninety-minute written examination is scheduled, you must also write a written examination abroad.
