Our Bachelor Degree Program in Political Science is based on a clearly structured curriculum, characterized by the following special features:
Discipline specific focus
The degree course is discipline oriented. A three semester foundation course introduces you to the full scope of the discipline. Building on this foundation you can proceed step by step to establish your own areas of specialization in the fields of political theory, methods, political systems, international relations, Europe, and governance, whereby you can choose to orient yourself more to research or to practical studies. The degree course concludes with the writing of a bachelor thesis. The program is limited to nine semesters
The degree program is research-oriented. A special emphasis is placed on teaching methodologies, quantitative and qualitative, which enable the student to relate theory to empirical reality. In this way you learn to develop and carry out your own research projects.
The degree course is characterized by the comprehensive support it gives to students. Apart from introductory lectures, learning takes place primarily in small groups of from ten to thirty students. While writing your bachelor thesis you will be supported both individually and in the framework of accompanying seminars. In addition the Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science provides comprehensive counseling and support through its degree program coordinator (Studiengangskoordination) and Student Office (Studienbüro).
The Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science enjoys a wide range of international contacts with renowned partner universities from which you can benefit by participating in a study abroad program. Each year we place about fifty bachelor degree students in a study abroad program at one of our partner universities. We also regularly invite internationally recognized colleagues to Munich as visiting professors. Classes in English are offered routinely.
In addition to the major in political science (120 ECTS), our bachelor degree course includes a minor subject (60 ECTS) which you can select according to your own interests (two- subject bachelor degree program).
Our graduates enjoy good career prospects. Among others, on the staff of law makers, factions, and parties at European, federal, state and municipal levels, in civic education, associations and foundations, public administration, NGOs, international organizations, the foreign service, think tanks, political and business consulting, media, press and public relations, as well as in human resources and corporate responsibility departments.
The bachelor degree program is excellent preparation for a variety of master degree programs at home and abroad. Due to its wide scope it can lead both to consecutive master degree programs that build directly on previous studies as well as to non-consecutive (specialized) master degree programs. The Geschwister Scholl Institute of Political Science offers a consecutive Master Degree Program in Political Science.
